With 800:1 contrast ratio, 5ms grey to grey response time, 2 x 2W built in speakers and a headphone jack the Asus MB17SE LCD monitor won’t let you down when you have an important presentation approaching at work or when saving a damsel in distress in your favorite online game.
The Asus MB 17SE’s response time is second only to the #2 monitor, the LG. A fast response time makes this monitor great for gamers. However, its brightness level of 320 cd/m2 may put too much strain on the eye. Additionally, this monitor does not have a digital input. Although this may not be a problem for the time being, the monitor may go out of date faster than monitors incorporating analog and digital technology.
Display:
The MB 17SE has contrast ratio of 800:1, 5ms response time, 16.2 million colors and SXGA 1280 x 1024 resolution. These features are great for avid gamers and those using their computers for recreation, like movies or photography.
The MB 17SE has a brightness of 320 cd/m2; however, the suggested brightness for most monitors is 300. Anything more or less than 300 may put additional strain on the eyes and cause fatigue or headaches. Although 20 cd/m2s is not that much off the suggested level, it may be a consideration for those that spend hours upon hours in front of their monitor. Additionally, this LCD monitor only uses analog input. While many monitors only incorporate analog inputs, the future lies in digital.
Ergonomic Adjustments:
This monitor can tilt +20° and
5°. For more flexibility you may need to attach the monitor to an arm.
Features:
The Asus MB 17SE includes a wide array of features including built
in 2 x2W speakers, a headphone jack, Kensington lock slot and is VESA wall mount compliant. If this monitor included USB ports, it would be perfect.
Although this LCD monitor is Energy Star compliant, it uses 50 watts of energy. This is more energy than most of the other LCD monitors we reviewed. Additionally, it is not compatible with MAC.
Product Support:
Asus provides online user manuals, a FAQ section with search features, a section for email inquiries and user forums. Many of our questions were answered without contacting customer support.
Summary:
The Asus MB 17SE is one of the best LCD monitors on the market in regards to display and features; however, it may be difficult ordering one of these machines because you can not buy directly from Asus, you have to find a reseller. Additionally, your monitor may go out of date faster than expected because it does not include a digital input.
